Global Week Events in Rwanda Highlight SDG Contributions by GREATER Project Partners
As part of the Global SDG Week, Rwanda's GREATER Project partners each hosted events that demonstrated their commitment to achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This initiative, framed within the Erasmus+ program, highlights how higher education institutions in Rwanda are driving positive change through innovative projects. On September 19, 2024, INES-Ruhengeri inaugurated its Living Lab located in Busengo. In his address, Fr. Dr. Baribeshya Jean Bosco, Vice-Chancellor of INES-Ruhengeri, emphasized how the Living Lab supports the university’s mission of benefiting the community. "This aligns with INES’ vision of using what is taught at the university to benefit the community. Our goal is to contribute to national efforts to promote environmental sustainability by using solar-generated electricity to improve lives," he stated. This initiative aims to address environmental sustainability, one of the key pillars of the SDGs, by harnessing clean energy to power local innovations.
The event was graced by the Guest of Honor, Ms. Vestine MUKANDAYISENGA, the Mayor of Gakenke District.
The following day, on September 20, 2024, the University of Rwanda held a similar event at their Living Lab located in Bugesera District. This Living Lab focuses on smart irrigation system, which will be powered entirely by green energy, aligning with SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). The Living Lab’s goal is to help the farmer efficiently manage water resources in the face of drought in Bugesera District, ensuring agricultural sustainability and food security. On September 21, 2024, RP Tumba College of Technology hosted the event where the coordination team of the GREATER Project explained the project’s goals. The event emphasized how students can actively participate in achieving the SDGs by contributing to the GREATER project. In the afternoon, the University of Technology and Arts of Byumba (UTAB) closed the Global Week with an event that underscored the important role of academia in driving SDG progress through research and community-based initiatives.
